Review: “Lonely in the Morning”

Through the release of the single “lonely in the morning,” Instant Crush looks to understand their feelings of change and loss. With a synth-indie-pop sound, songwriters Megan Cannon and Paul Sawicki captivate us with their contradictory feelings of excitement and anxiety around growing older. Backed up by Matthew Tran and Zoee and Keegan Mangahas, the 5-piece band has given us the next dance-alone-in-your-bedroom anthem.

Soaked in nostalgia, Cannon laments about the different paths she could have taken (“I get caught up in the beauty / Of the dreams I had when I was fifteen”). Feeling stagnant, she watches her friends change through social media and phone catch-ups. The track is gentle and shy, but powerful and relatable. Understanding how to accept the changing dynamics of relationships, especially becoming an adult, is difficult and clearly outlined by Cannon’s chants of “so low, so lonely” blending over Sawicki’s attention-grabbing bass lines and Tran’s steady beat.

Cannon’s sorrow takes us through the winding, breezy roads of springtime in Puget Sound — our friends laugh in the back of our car, but things change quickly, and friends move on. Catching up can be hard, and Cannon wishes that she also knew what her calling was (“Driving north with the windows down / Hoping one day I’ll come around / And fall in love with where I’m going.”) Her journey, while emotional, is not negative. Instead, Cannon looks for what is coming next.

The three-and-a-half-minute song is a hint at what is to come from Instant Crush. With a fanbase that is quickly growing, we are all on the edge of our seats to see what is released next.
