Review: “Discordant Dream Emulator,” GLITCHLETTE’S new psychopomp fantasy

GLITCHLETTE conjures dark, dreamy, and otherworldly imagery with her newest release, “Discordant Dream Emulator.” The three-and-a-half-minute track is yet another product of Autumn Marceau’s musical genius, combining experimental electronic pop with heavier, industrial elements for a psychoactive ambient experience that shakes the listener to their core.

The track opens with a higher-pitched synthetic melody reminiscent of a breeze flowing through a set of wind chimes. As the melody progresses, it is joined by deep percussion, building up and up until a very brief pause (a glitch, if you will), and the beat drops. The lighter, chime-adjacent melody is replaced by a grittier metal sound backed by Marceau’s own vocalization, dark and eerie repetition of the word “yeah” tucked behind the body of the chorus.

The second verse brings a calmer atmosphere back to the track. The surrounding noise of the chorus has evened out, but the deepness of the melody remains the same. It’s audibly different from the first verse but not in a way that overtly stands out. Instead, the second verse feels like a more confident progression from the first, taking up more space in the listener’s ear. There’s a rise back into the same chorus before a quick drop-off, a gentler bridge backed by an abundance of noise elements, and a return into the chorus one last time before fading out entirely.

“Discordant Dream Emulator” is GLITCHLETTE’s first Bandcamp release since her 2018 EP “Subsoil.” However, the single itself is not new to Marceau and was instead tracked out pretty shortly after the initial release of the EP.

“The foundation of the song is even older,” commented Marceau. “The bass patch was one I made on my then partner’s Kaossilator, which I then recorded into Ableton and saved for like, two years.”

The release of “Discordant Dream Emulator” has been highly anticipated, with nearly four years passing since her last recorded project. The track certainly does not disappoint, announcing GLITCHLETTE’s return to streaming platforms loudly and unapologetically, in a trippy, audibly-addicting fashion.

“I think it sounds like something that belongs on The Matrix,” said Marceau. She’s got a point.
